10. - "What Makes A Hero"

What makes a hero? This is a question asked throughout history. Does this person have what it takes to be called a hero of this country? Based on how he spent his life, could he possibly replace our current national hero? All of these questions lead back to what makes a hero.

So what is a hero? If you consult the Merriam - Webster Dictionary, it defines a hero as someone who is admired. This person is admired for the great qualities he possesses and the acts of bravery he has done.

If you are still unclear on what a hero is, let me give you some examples. We, Filipinos, have a handful of heroes to look up to.  Recall how Lapu-Lapu faced Ferdinand Magellan on the shores of Mactan. Recall how Diego Silang revolted to fulfill his dream of an independent Ilocano nation. Recall how Andres Bonifacio and his Katipuneros fought in battle. Heroes like them are the reason why we are free. Our freedom is the product of their blood and sacrifice.

But does being a hero mean dying for your country? Does it mean that one has to revolt and face violence?
No, I do not think so. One becomes a hero in his own little ways. It could be by writing to inspire others as Jose Rizal did. In modern time, a hero could be someone who simply helped another person in need. You could be one by being courageous - courageous in facing your problem. You could be one by being brave. Do not be afraid to stand up for someone or something. You could share your food with someone less fortunate or simply stay up at night to help a sibling study.

In the end, we are all capable of being heroes. We do not have to die for our country. We could be one in our own little ways as long as we show a hero's attributes - courage, bravery and self-sacrifice. Therefore, the act that one does in the face of adversity, struggle or a simple dilemma is what makes him a hero.
