15. Smoking is Bad For You!

Image
ATTENTION: Asia Pacific College now has an anti-smoking campaign. It is common knowledge that smoking is bad for your health. However, most students do not realize the gravity of this. Because we are young, we are still somewhat naive of the consequences of our health in the future. But let me tell you this - Smoking IS BAD for your health! Smoking can lead to lung cancer. Tobacco cigarettes contain carbon monoxide and tar. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. Meanwhile, tar is made up of several cancer-causing chemicals. Do you really want to inhale these things? Smoking is addictive. You may say that you only plant to try smoking and not do it on a daily basis, but one day you might wake up as a smoking addict. Cigarettes contain an addictive ingredient called nicotine. Through this post, I hope that I have somewhat made a difference. I hope that my fellow students would stop smoking. ALWAYS REMEMBER that smoking causes cancer and it is highly addictive.

14. - Taking I.T. Back

Image
It was in the year 1997 that the School of Computer Science and Information Technology (SoCSIT) was established in Asia Pacific College (APC). To commemorate this historic event, APC celebrates SoCSIT week every year. To give you a heads up, this is my freshman year at Asia Pacific College. This was my first time to experience SoCSIT week. I had high hopes for this event and I was so excited. We had our opening ceremony at the school parking lot on Tuesday. The idea of standing for 2 hours at the parking lot under the heat of the afternoon sun was not appealing to me. But being good sports, we all lined up at the parking lot. We were dressed in our 90's attire. We, the freshmen, were asked to parade around the parking lot in our costumes and with our banner. By this point, we were all sweating like crazy. But in the end, it was all worth it. We were treated to a performance from APC DC. We also had the chance to see the candidates of Mr. & Ms. APC strut their

13. - An Eventful Week

Image
This week was action packed. Well, for it me it wasn't. Most of my weeks are typically robotic and of routine, but not this recent one. It started like a typical boring school week. I studied for a quiz on Monday. Wrote down notes during Algebra. I racked my brain for some meaningful essays and blog on Tuesday. It wan't until Wednesday when things got interesting. Last Wednesday, we were given the entire period of our PUBSPE1 for our speech choir practice. The entire four - hour period was used. Our leader asked if I could deliver a line that required me to shout... Of course, my block mates laughed. A friend of mine said that I sounded like a bunny trying to roar like a dragon. Another, block mate said I was like a rat trying to scream. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or give someone a high five- to the face- with a chair (just kidding). Though I appreciate the likeness to a cute and sweet animal like a bunny. Thursday was more eventful. During the

12. - Why the Lord Made Cockroaches

Image
During my senior year in high school, I had the opportunity to be taught by an amazing Filipino teacher. He was funny and unconventional. He was Sir Ricky Villanueva. He managed to make reading Dr. Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo fun for us students, but enough about El Fili. I remember one day in class, he asked us why the Lord made cockroaches.  They were tiny pests that bothered people. Surely there was no reason why the Lord made cockroaches. Minutes ticked by and we had not answered his question. He then gave us a mischievous smile and said that a cockroach has two reasons for its existence. One was that it was an indicator. You would know if a place was dirty when these creatures start showing up. Second, it is an inspiration. Do you notice how much of a fighter cockroaches are? No matter how hard you step on them, they seem to be immortal. Once you think it is dead, it slowly starts crawling away to safety. You have to admire its will to live. I

11. - "A Book Is More Than That"

Image
An American philosopher named Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.". It is a common belief that reading books is a way to expand one's knowledge. I am not saying that this is untrue. I am saying that a book is more than that. A book is more than a tool to absorb information because it is a work of art, it offers an escape from reality and it is a very good tool to motivate. Just like every masterpiece, creating a book takes time. It takes months, maybe even years, to publish a book. A book is a work of art. It contains intricate stanzas and paragraphs. It is appealing. It is beautifully crafted. Have you ever experienced a bad day and just sat down to read a book? It's as if reading a book somehow makes you forget your problems. Reading a book helps you detach yourself from ordinary business and stressful thoughts. It even saves you from boredom. It takes you on an adventure that is

10. - "What Makes A Hero"

Image
What makes a hero? This is a question asked throughout history. Does this person have what it takes to be called a hero of this country? Based on how he spent his life, could he possibly replace our current national hero? All of these questions lead back to what makes a hero. So what is a hero? If you consult the Merriam - Webster Dictionary, it defines a hero as someone who is admired. This person is admired for the great qualities he possesses and the acts of bravery he has done. If you are still unclear on what a hero is, let me give you some examples. We, Filipinos, have a handful of heroes to look up to.  Recall how Lapu-Lapu faced Ferdinand Magellan on the shores of Mactan. Recall how Diego Silang revolted to fulfill his dream of an independent Ilocano nation. Recall how Andres Bonifacio and his Katipuneros fought in battle. Heroes like them are the reason why we are free. Our freedom is the product of their blood and sacrifice. But does being a hero mean

9. - Video Conferencing in the Digital Age

Image
What is a video conference? A video conference is a live conference between two or more people from different places who communicate through computer networks to transmit audio or video data. Just like everything in the digital age, video conferencing has its own advantages and disadvantages.             One advantage of video conferencing is that you don’t have to spend time and money on travelling to meetings. It gives us the chance to communicate with people from different countries without them travelling. Another advantage of video conferencing is you actually get to see the person unlike when you do a typical conference call on the phone. You get to see the person’s reaction and body language. Lastly, it increases productivity. The participants of a video conference can all view a document on their screen at the same time. This helps the participants to brainstorm their ideas easily.             In contrast, here are some of the dis

8. - Do I Have What It Takes To Be A Filipino?

Image
“I am Filipino, born of freedom, freedom for myself, my children, and my children's children, forever." Carlos P. Romulo. Do you know who he is? Carlos P. Romulo was a Filipino diplomat, statesman, soldier, journalist and author. The passage I cited earlier was from his work, “I am Filipino”. But what makes a Filipino? Do I have what it take to be a Filipino? Together, let's see how Carlos P. Romulo defines a Filipino. " I am Filipino I am responsible for my glorious past, with an obligation to an uncertain future" The first Filipinos were those brave enough to cross the sea to this uncertain land, the land they now call home. The land Filipinos call home, the Philippines. As a Filipino, I have an obligation. An obligation to take care of my home for the generations to come. I shall not do anything to harm nor destroy the beauty of this motherland. This land filled with green forests, lush mountains, and pristine waters. This

7. - Nighttime Nemesis

Image
When I was in my fourth year of high school, I started experiencing cramps during my sleep. I'd wake up in excruciating pain as the muscles in my legs contracted. It normally happened during the early morning (1-3 am). These went on for almost 2 months every week.  My mom teased that it was just my body reacting to the fact that I lacked exercise. I wasn't used to exercising anymore because in my third year of high school, I didn't really see eye to eye with my PE teacher. She would give us low marks whenever we participated in PE class. So, I experimented. I hardly attended PE classes for a whole term. Low and behold, I received the highest marks I've ever gotten from her. In return, I seldom attended PE class. But in my final year of high school, I had a different teacher so I started attending PE class regularly. My body did not respond well. Thus, the nighttime cramps began. My doctor advised me to do stretch everyday. Fortunately, it did help and I sto

6. - That 90's - 2000's Nickelodeon Show

Image
Growing up, I loved watching TV shows. I was Nickelodeon kid back then. By the mid 2000's my favorite shows started going off air. Unsatisfied, I started hunting down some TV shows from the 90's on the internet. Feeling nostalgic, I decided to list down some of the Nickelodeon shows I'm still in love after so many years. 1. ALL THAT All That  was the SNL (Saturday Night Live) for kids back then. It was a live-action sketch comedy variety show. Aside from watching original sketches, weekly musical guests would perform on the show. Some notable sketches were Ask Ashley, Good Burger, The Loud Librarian, and Know Your Stars. Some notable cast members were Nick Cannon, Kel Mitchell, Kenan Thompson, Amanda Bynes, and Jamie Lynn Spears. 2. KENAN AND KEL When I was younger, I use to sleepover at my grand aunt's house. One of my uncles was watching Kenan & Kel on his laptop. Being a curious kid, I watched along with him. I instantly loved it. I could

5. - Think Twice For the Love of Fast Food

Image
Who among you love to eat fast food? Our school’s next door neighbor is a fast food restaurant, so I'm pretty sure my block mates eat fast food. Now what would you say if I told you that eating fast food is bad for your health? Here are some shocking revelations about eating fast food.... dun dun dun! First off, let us define what fast food is. Fast food is food from a take-out restaurant that is cheap, convenient, and served fast. These food are highly processed and contains large amounts of carbohydrates, added sugar, unhealthy fats, and salt (sodium). This means that it contains if not few then zero nutrients. Fast food contains a lot of carbohydrates and calories. Too much carbohydrate can alter our natural insulin response that results to a spike in blood sugar. Frequent spikes in blood sugar may lead to type II diabetes and insulin resistance. Trans fat is also often found in fast food. This may also lead to development of type II diabetes and raise

4. - Pause.....Stop.....Rewind

Image
After 5 blog posts, I've realized something. I haven't really introduced myself yet. It's time to step back for a moment and rewind. I've decided to introduce myself in an unconventional way. I made 2 crazy none sense poems that would hopefully give an impression of myself to you. WEIRD POEM NO. 1 Who is Katelyn Anne? K – keen listener who is,  A – always available,  T – to talk to  E – earnest reader and, L – lover of,  Y – young – adult fantasy,  N – novels like Harry Potter  A – an avid film viewer although,  N – not a fan of horror films  N – never passes up an opportunity to,  E – eat pizza or any other food WEIRD POEM NO. 2 “I am Kate, Ingenious”  I am ingenious and inquisitive  I wonder if the stars shall still shine,  once no one is left to behold their brilliance  I hear the constellations whispering secrets with one another,  as they dance across the night sky  I see a magnificent heave

3. - Movies for the Rainy Season

Image
Once again, the rainy season has begun. July kicked off the rainy season here in the Philippines with 2 consecutive typhoons last week. Classes were suspended last Monday and last Wednesday up until the previous Friday. I'd love to say that I took advantage of the cancellation of classes by studying for my midterms, but then I wouldn't be completely honest with you. It's just that the rain and cold weather relaxes my mood. Admittedly, I laze around when it's raining because I don't feel motivated. I end up watching movies while wrapped in a warm blanket. To become somewhat productive, I've decided to make a list of movies to watch for the rainy season. 1. The Impossible (2012) The Impossible is a gut-wrenching drama based on a true story. It is adapted from the Belon family's real experiences and hardships during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. This film would hopefully bring you closer to your family as you realize their importance. The film sta

2. - Audrey Hepburn's Secret To Beauty

Image
The Secret to beauty is “For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.” These were the wise words imparted to us by Audrey Hepburn.  Audrey Hepburn is remembered by most people because of her graceful petite body, air of elegance, iconic style, and timeless beauty. But there is more to her than what meets the eye. She was more than just another pretty face. The beautiful and elegant Audrey Kathleen Ruston was born on May 4, 1929 in Ixelles, a municipality in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was Joseph Victor Anthony Ruston - a one-time honorary British consul in the Dutch East Indies. Her mother, Baroness Ella van Heemstra, was a Dutch aristocrat. Due to her mother’s family in the Netherlands and her father’s British background, the family frequently traveled. Thus, Audrey Hepburn became fluent in 5 languages – English, Dutch, French, Spani
